NC State Rep. Zack Hawkins and Rep. B. Ray Jeffers Visits DECI for Discussion on Inclusive Employment

Updated: Oct 22

On Monday, October 6, DECI proudly welcomed North Carolina State Representatives Zack Hawkins and B. Ray Jeffers for a powerful and inspiring visit to our facility. Their time with us focused on learning more about DECI’s mission, the individuals we serve, and how we’re championing vocational rehabilitation and inclusive employment for adults with disabilities in Durham and beyond.

Led by our Director of Advocacy and Outreach, Sonja Beckford, the visit included a guided tour of our production floor, where both Representatives had the opportunity to meet several of our incredible client workers. They witnessed firsthand the pride and professionalism our teams bring to every task—from packaging and fulfillment to specialized projects for our customers.

The visit culminated in a roundtable discussion with DECI leadership, including CEO Alan Wayne and other department leads. The conversation covered a range of important topics, including legislative priorities, employment barriers, and the ongoing need for expanded resources within the IDD (Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities) community.

“Everyone deserves to maximize their giving for potential in North Carolina, and that's exactly what DECI is doing.”

- NC State Rep. Hawkins.

DECI is honored to have welcomed Rep. Hawkins and Rep. Jeffers and grateful for their time, attention, and ongoing support. Their visit affirmed the importance of our work and opened the door to future partnerships that can further elevate the voices of those we serve.

We look forward to continuing the conversation—and to showcasing more of the impact made possible through inclusive employment.
