Mastering Work Life Balance Through Effective Benefits Seminar Strategies

Updated: Aug 27

Join us for another informative session discussing how benefits pertain to individuals with special needs, whether you are working, seeking services, community assistance, or would like to have better understanding of benefits in general.

This seminar is open to individuals who receive benefits and are currently working or are interested in working, caregivers, guardians, agencies, or those who may be seeking benefits in the near future.

Overview of the Seminar

On September 9th, 2025, DECI will be holding a Benefits Seminar that will shed light on navigating benefits while managing work and life. Our goal is to empower you with valuable insights into various benefits programs, including Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). You will learn how these benefits can change when you enter the workforce.

Understanding SSI and SSDI

SSI – How Working Affects Monthly Benefits

SSI is a needs-based benefit run by Social Security for people with disabilities who have limited income/resources.

When someone starts working and earning wages, SSI doesn’t disappear right away — but the monthly amount can change.

SSDI – How Working Affects Monthly Benefits

SSDI is different from SSI — it’s an insurance benefit earned through past work history and payroll taxes.

Why This Matters for DECI

Many people fear that working will instantly end their SSDI — but the rules actually give a long runway to try working, with safety nets built in. DECI staff can help participants understand how work income affects SSDI and connect them with resources (like Benefits Counseling) to plan confidently.

Medicaid and Medicare Overview

Recertification Process

Understanding the healthcare landscape and its requirements can be challenging, especially for individuals with special needs. Medicaid and Medicare offer vital health coverage, but it is essential to grasp the recertification process.

During the seminar, we will walk through the necessary documentation and timelines for recertification. One missing document could lead to a loss of coverage, so arming yourself with this knowledge is crucial to prevent healthcare gaps.

Work/Benefits Balance

Pros vs. Cons Discussion

Finding the right mix between work and benefits is a topic many individuals with special needs face. We will host a discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of working while receiving benefits.

For instance, while earning a salary can increase independence and self-sufficiency, it's also important to consider the potential reduction in benefits. Sharing personal experiences can help participants gain insight into making informed decisions about their work life.

Reporting Monthly Earnings

To Whom and When?

A crucial part of maintaining benefits while working is understanding the reporting requirements for monthly earnings. During the seminar, participants will learn who to report earnings to and the reporting timelines.

For example, Social Security requires that you report your monthly earnings by the 10th of the following month. Missing this deadline could lead to serious consequences, such as overpayments or the loss of benefits, which highlights the importance of keeping accurate records.
